ERGOTONE (Methyl Ergometrine Maleate)

Methyl Ergometrine Maleate has a much more powerful action on the uterus than that of the other alkaloids of ergot, especially on the puerperal uterus. It is used in prevention and treatment of postpartum haemorrhage caused by uterine atony; by maintaining uterine contraction and tone, blood vessels in uterine wall are compressed, and blood flow reduced.

It is given after delivery of the anterior shoulder or on completion of the third stage of labour in a dose of 200?g orally 3 or 4 times daily upto 7 days. Until the danger of atony and haemorrhage has passed.
